Orchard Road Construction Update...

 Here's the latest...

The paving of the new concrete southbound lanes of Orchard between Jericho and US 30 is set to begin on Tuesday November 1st.  Work will begin at 7:00 AM and will continue well into the late afternoon.  The operation will begin just south of Cornell and will end a few hundred feet south of Knell Drive (at the General Mills Distribution Center).   The Contractor will have multiple flaggers on site to control traffic and allow access for the anticipated 250 loads of concrete that will be needed to complete the first day of work.  The concrete will be delivered at a rate of one load every 2 minutes so traffic will need to be stopped frequently for the trucks to re-enter the roadway.  Please use caution when driving through the area tomorrow and follow the directions of the flagger.  Thank you in advance for you cooperation and patience.

Montgomery Announces

Leaf Pick-Up Service

The Village of Montgomery Public Works Department will be offering leaf pick-up service beginning mid-October and running through mid-November.  Leaves must be neatly raked on the parkway along the curb by 7 am on Monday of each week.

Leaf piles should NOT be placed in the street as they can clog sewer drains, and cannot include grass clippings or sticks. Do not place leaves behind parked cars, mailboxes, or refuse containers, as they will interfere with the collection of leaves.  Leaves should not be placed in bags unless intended for collection by Allied Waste.  Please remember that leaf burning is prohibited by Village ordinance.

For more information, please contact the Public Works Department at 630-896-9241.

Chamber Luncheon Antidote for Autumn Chill

On Tuesday, October 25th, Grandma's Table restaurant served as the gathering place for members of the Greater Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce's monthly member luncheon. The buffet menu of broccoli cheese soup, assorted rolls, fried chicken, roast beef, mashed potatoes and green beans proved the perfect antidote to an otherwise wet, chilly day.

Members enjoyed mingling with friends, new and old, and filled the room with smiles and camaraderie. Said one new member: "I was afraid that since I didn't really know anyone, I would feel out of place. But I was pleasantly surprised. I'm glad I came." And from another, "I enjoyed meeting everyone and am looking forward to 'sampling' all the restaurants in Montgomery!"

Unique to the Montgomery Chamber is its plan to move the member luncheon to different local restaurants each month. "This way, we help support local businesses. And with over 20 restaurants in Montgomery, our members get to enjoy a variety of food and scenery," said Mike Pfeiffer, Membership Co-chair.

Attendees at the October 25th gathering included:

Vori Dhabolt (Alarm Detection Systems), Charlene Coulombe Fiore (MEDC), Julie Domres (DSM Enterprises), Bob Glenn (Allstate Insurance), Dave Gruhlke (Farmer's Insurance), Lisa Gruhlke (Orchard Road Animal Hospital), Carrie Herr (AmericInn Lodge & Suites), Janie Ioannou (Kendall Immediate Care), Meta Mueller (Premier Designs Jewelry), Jennifer Jones Sinnott (Brian Feltes & Associates), Tom Kozlowicz (Holiday Inn Express), Jan Kucera (Sun Times Media/ Beacon News), Bob Lockwood (Full Armour Studios), Pam Nagel (GMACC), Mike Pfeiffer (NetComm Business Solutions), Mark Stamberger (Nelson Multimedia/ WSPY),

Andre Salles (Montgomery Patch), Paul Straits (Vesco Reprographic), Marilyn Michelini, Anne Marie Gaura and Jamie Belongia (Village of Montgomery).

Guest speaker for the luncheon was, Jo Fredell Higgins, an internationally published writer, photographer, historian, award-winning essayist and poet. Higgins recently finished her fifth photo history book published by Arcadia Press, Images of America: Montgomery. (Her previous titles have highlighted the history of Naperville, Geneva, DeKalb, and Aurora.) She shared a bit about the process of writing her latest book and read a few excerpts highlighting Daniel Gray, the founder of the Village, and his extended family. When she began her research, she only knew one resident of Montgomery, Village President, Marilyn Michelini. Michelini directed her to other community members and they in turn introduced her to others. Higgins said, "It's amazing how people I had never met opened their homes and their lives to me."

Special thanks go out to Schaefer Greenhouses for providing a lovely autumn centerpiece for the luncheon. Tom Kozlowicz (Holiday Inn Express) was the happy winner of this door prize.

GMACC members and prospective business members are welcome to attend next month's luncheon on Tuesday, November 22, at George's Family Restaurant, on the corner of Webster and River Streets in downtown Montgomery. There is no charge to attend, just the price of your lunch.

For more information and to register for the November luncheon and other upcoming events, visit the Greater Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce website (www.chamberofmontgomeryil.org,) or call the Chamber office at 630-897-8137.

Help Us Help Those in Need This Holiday Season

With the holiday season just around the corner, Fox Valley United Way is once again partnering with local businesses, community groups, families and individuals who want to reach out a helping had to those who are having difficulties during these tough economic times.

While many of us are telling our children that there won't be a lot of gifts under the tree this year, many children in our community will not have any.  That is unless we do something to help.  The Fox Valley United Way wants to help those needy families who won't have the means to provide gifts for their children this year.

Unfortunately for these families, many other resources in the community have dried up.  Therefore, the Fox Valley United Way is asking businesses and their employees, community groups, families and individuals to consider making it a brighter holiday for area children.

Here's how you can make a difference:

- Adopt an individual family (Info: deborah.collins@uwfoxvalley.org)

- Make a montetery donation (Checks mailed to Fox Valley United Way, 44 East Galena Blvd., Aurora, IL  60505/ Cash donations can be dropped off at that same address/ Or contribute by credit card at www.uwfoxvalley.org).

- Purchase a gift card from a local grocery store to help provide a holiday meal for a family

- Purchase hats, gloves, mittens and scarves for the children so they don't have to worry about being cold during the winter months

- Run a children's toy drive!  Drop off unwrapped gifts at the Fox Valley United Way office.

Please note: all gifts should be unwrapped and donations of any size are appreciated.  Deadline to drop off donations at the Fox Valley United Way office is Friday, December 9th.
